Torrential rain turns into flood in Ankara: Metro services halted

Ankara was hit by heavy rainfall in the afternoon, causing water accumulation on the roads in many districts. Due to the intense rainfall, the Ayaş road was temporarily closed to traffic, leaving several drivers waiting for the water to be drained. Some vehicles were moved to areas without water using heavy machinery and forklifts.

The downpour, especially in Çankaya, Sincan, and Etimesgut, led to some metro entrances and underpasses being filled with water. As a result, metro services were halted until the water receded, causing inconvenience to commuters.

On the Ankara Ayaş D140 highway, a number of vehicles were submerged in water as the road turned into a lake due to the heavy rainfall. Drivers and passengers found themselves stranded in their vehicles, with some abandoning their cars to reach safety areas. Rescue teams worked to evacuate the vehicles submerged in water using machinery and forklifts.

In Polatlı, a parked car was swept away by floodwaters into a field, only to be revealed when the water receded. It was discovered that there was no one inside the vehicle at the time it was dragged into the field, highlighting the severity of the situation caused by the sudden deluge.

People like Mustafa Duran, who was caught in his car during the storm, expressed their struggles and fear of drowning as water filled their vehicles. The intensity of the rain forced them to abandon their cars, leaving them stranded along with numerous other affected individuals.

According to information from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Meteorology General Directorate, Sincan received the highest amount of rainfall in Ankara, with 38.34 kilograms per square meter in a span of 6 hours. Other districts in the capital also experienced varying levels of rainfall, highlighting the widespread impact of the weather phenomenon.

Meteorological data suggests that the rain is expected to continue intermittently in Ankara until late at night, with clear skies forecasted from the following day onwards. Additionally, temperatures in the city are expected to remain above seasonal norms starting from Tuesday. The continuous monitoring of weather conditions and preparation for potential weather-related events is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Ankara and other affected regions.
