Garry Conille, a UN development specialist, has arrived in Haiti to assume the role of prime minister.

Conille’s appointment comes at a critical time for Haiti as the country continues to grapple with political instability, gang violence, and economic challenges. The transitional council hopes that Conille, with his experience in the region and previous tenure as prime minister, will be able to lead the country towards stability and pave the way for free and fair elections. His first task will be to address the surging gang violence in parts of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and beyond.

During his previous term as prime minister from October 2011 to May 2012, Conille worked closely with then President Michel Martelly to implement various development projects and policies aimed at improving the country’s socio-economic situation. As the former regional director for UNICEF in Latin America and the Caribbean, Conille brings a wealth of experience in development work and has a deep understanding of the challenges facing Haiti. His background and expertise make him well-suited for the task at hand.

One of the immediate challenges Conille will face is the deployment of a U.N.-backed police force from Kenya and other countries to help maintain security in Haiti. Gang violence has been a major issue in the country, with criminal groups exerting control over certain areas and posing a threat to the safety and security of the population. The deployment of an international police force is seen as a necessary step towards restoring law and order in Haiti.

In addition to addressing security concerns, Conille will also need to focus on rebuilding the country’s economy, which has been severely impacted by political instability and natural disasters. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, and the recent unrest has further exacerbated the economic challenges faced by its people. Conille will need to work towards attracting investment, creating job opportunities, and improving living conditions for the population.

As Conille begins his tenure as prime minister, all eyes will be on him to see how he navigates the complex political landscape in Haiti and leads the country towards stability and prosperity. The international community will be closely monitoring his progress and offering support where needed to ensure that Haiti can overcome its current challenges. With the right leadership and support, there is hope that Haiti can emerge from its current crisis stronger and more resilient than before.
