Republican attorney Tayler Rahm, who is running to unseat Democrat Rep. Angie Craig in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District, has come under scrutiny for apparently scrubbing his law firm’s website of references to defending clients accused of violent crimes. Prior to launching his campaign, his firm’s website boasted experience in major felony cases including drugs, assault, and murder. However, those references were removed after Rahm announced his bid for Congress in June of last year. Rahm has defended clients accused of crimes such as sexual assault of a minor, possession of child pornography, and first-degree murder.
Rahm’s campaign has focused on addressing what he describes as “out-of-control” crime, advocating for arresting, prosecuting, and imprisoning violent criminals. He has criticized what he perceives as leniency on the part of progressive prosecutors and judges, stating that it emboldens criminals. Rahm did not address the website changes when contacted for comment but emphasized his experience as a trial attorney, asserting that corrupt prosecutors have targeted individuals such as former President Donald Trump and law enforcement officers. He emphasized the importance of everyone having a defense lawyer given the current state of the justice system.
The Republican candidate also criticized an unnamed primary opponent, likely Joe Teirab, a former federal prosecutor, for offering “sweetheart plea deals” that allow criminals to escape serious consequences. Rahm highlighted the importance of constitutional rights such as the right to an attorney, the presumption of innocence, and due process. He accused the “D.C. swamp” of trying to influence the candidate selection process in Minnesota’s 2nd District, but expressed confidence that voters and delegates would choose a candidate who will prioritize defending constitutional rights and civil liberties.
Rahm is competing in a Republican primary against Teirab and Mike Murphy, a former mayor. The eventual nominee will face Rep. Angie Craig in the general election, with analysts rating the race as “lean Democratic.” Despite facing criticism for the changes to his law firm’s website, Rahm remains focused on his campaign platform of addressing violent crime and promoting the defense of individuals’ rights within the justice system. As the election continues to unfold, voters in Minnesota’s 2nd District will have the opportunity to choose a candidate who aligns with their priorities and values.
