16-year-old Lily Yohannes made her USWNT debut under Emma Hayes and scored her first goal all in one night, entering the match against South Korea in the 72nd minute and scoring in the 82nd. Hayes had previously coached against Yohannes when Chelsea played Ajax in the Champions League. Yohannes, who is the youngest player ever to start a UEFA Champions League match, impressed Hayes with her maturity and confidence on the field. The entire team celebrated her goal, showing how supportive they are of their young teammate and the impact she has made in a short amount of time. Yohannes, who turns 17 in June, is the eighth-youngest player in USWNT history to make her international debut and the third youngest to score a goal.

Yohannes, originally from Springfield, VA, moved to the Netherlands at the age of 10. She signed a professional contract with Ajax at 15 and has become a regular starter for the club. She is eligible to play for both the US and Dutch national teams, but has not yet made a decision on which to represent. Despite being one of the youngest players on the team, Yohannes feels accepted and valued by her older teammates, who appreciate her maturity and talent on the field. Players like Crystal Dunn and Rose Lavelle praise Yohannes for her skill and potential, with Lavelle especially impressed by the 16-year-old’s maturity and talent on the field.

Yohannes’ second call up to the USWNT was met with praise from Hayes, who has been impressed by the youngster’s performance in training. Hayes describes Yohannes as a “press resistant player” who can handle pressure well and deliver quality passes. Playing for Ajax and having Champions League experience has accelerated Yohannes’ learning and development on the field, giving her a maturity and confidence beyond her years. Hayes celebrates Yohannes’ first cap as a special moment for her and her family, recognizing the potential and talent she brings to the team.

Following her impressive performance, Yohannes faced the experience of speaking to reporters post-game. She waited for veteran Dunn to finish before speaking, showcasing her respect for her teammates. Dunn, in turn, enthusiastically welcomed Yohannes to the media interviews, showing her support and encouragement for the young player. Yohannes is embracing the opportunities and challenges that come with playing for the USWNT, taking in the experience and enjoying the journey alongside her teammates and coaches. Her debut and goal mark the beginning of what promises to be a bright future for the talented 16-year-old.

Yohannes’ goal was a moment of celebration and excitement for both her and her teammates, illustrating the camaraderie and support within the USWNT. Despite her age, Yohannes has quickly made an impact on the team with her skills and maturity on the field. Her debut and goal are significant milestones in her career, setting the stage for what could be a successful and promising future in soccer. As she continues to learn and grow with the team, Yohannes is poised to become a key player for the USWNT and make her mark on the international stage.
