Could Joe Mixon be the key ingredient for C.J. Stroud and the Texans’ offense?

The Texans’ offensive struggles in their divisional-round playoff loss to the Ravens last season highlighted the team’s need for improvement in their running game. Quarterback C.J. Stroud lacked support from the backfield, with running back Devin Singletary failing to make an impact. Head Coach DeMeco Ryans emphasized the importance of running the football, especially in the postseason. As a result, the Texans made moves in the offseason to address this issue, acquiring veteran running back Joe Mixon from the Bengals in a trade that included a contract extension. Mixon is expected to be a significant upgrade over Singletary and provide more playmaking ability in the backfield.

Mixon’s performance in the red zone was particularly impressive compared to Singletary’s, with a higher touchdown rate and efficiency metrics. Additionally, Mixon brings more speed to the Texans’ running back room, which could help improve their overall offensive production. His value extends beyond rushing, as he has been a reliable target in the passing game over the past three seasons. Mixon expressed excitement about the opportunity to showcase his skills in Houston and contribute to the team’s success. The Texans are hoping that Mixon’s proven track record and experience will help them continue their upward trajectory in the AFC.

While the addition of Mixon has the potential to boost Houston’s offense, there are risks involved in letting Singletary walk in free agency. Singletary was a standout performer in the second half of last season and is younger than Mixon, with fewer career carries. The Texans are placing their trust in Mixon’s consistency and durability, as he has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in multiple seasons and brings playoff experience from his time with the Bengals, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2021. Ryans is confident in Mixon’s abilities to move the chains and contribute to the team’s offensive schemes.

Ben Arthur, the AFC South reporter for FOX Sports, highlighted the Texans’ efforts to address their running game issues through the acquisition of Mixon and the departure of Singletary. The team’s focus on improving their ground attack reflects a fundamental belief in the importance of a balanced offensive approach, especially in critical postseason games. With Mixon now leading the backfield, the Texans are aiming to build on their recent successes and compete at a higher level in the competitive AFC. By making strategic moves in the offseason, Houston hopes to establish a more potent rushing attack that complements Stroud’s abilities as the team’s signal-caller. As they prepare for the upcoming season, the Texans will look to Mixon to provide the spark needed to take their offense to the next level.
