BBC greenlights a darker spin-off from Death in Paradise for second season

The BBC has reportedly ordered a second spin-off of the popular series Death In Paradise, which follows a detective inspector solving murders in the Caribbean. The new spin-off, titled Policing Paradise, will focus on the work of actual investigators in the tropical location. Unlike the fictional crimes that are easily solved on the show, the real-life version will showcase the challenges that real-life investigators face in solving crimes. The spin-off aims to provide viewers with a more realistic portrayal of police work in a tropical setting. The BBC has not yet commented on the new spin-off series.

In addition to Policing Paradise, the first spin-off of Death In Paradise, Beyond Paradise, has been airing since February 2023. The show follows DI Humphrey Goodman as he starts a new life in Devon. The spin-off explores the challenges of real-life crime-solving, as opposed to the tidy resolutions seen in the original series. Viewers may find that reality is more complex and unpredictable than they are used to seeing on screen. The series has been well-received by audiences and has paved the way for future spin-offs and new storytelling opportunities.

Death In Paradise has been on the air for more than a decade and has seen various lead detectives come and go. The most recent departure was DI Neville Parker, played by Ralf Little, who left the series alongside Naomi Thomas. The show’s brand new spin-off, Return to Paradise, will feature the franchise’s first-ever female lead detective, DI Mackenzie Clarke, played by Anna Samson. Set in sun-soaked Australia, the series will follow Mackenzie as she attempts to solve a series of mysterious murders. The show will have a distinct Australian flair while still paying homage to the original series.

Return to Paradise will debut on BBC1 and iPlayer later this year, marking the franchise’s second spin-off series. The show’s official synopsis describes Mackenzie Clarke as an Australian ex-pat who has gained recognition in London’s Metropolitan Police for solving difficult murder cases. Accused of tampering with evidence, Mackenzie is forced to return to her hometown of Dolphin Cove in Australia, where she is not welcomed due to her past actions. The new series promises to bring a fresh perspective to the franchise and introduce viewers to a new lead detective with a compelling backstory.

The new spin-off series comes at a time when the Death In Paradise franchise is expanding its storytelling and exploring new territories. With an emphasis on gritty and realistic crime-solving, Policing Paradise and Return to Paradise aim to offer viewers a different perspective on detective work. The addition of a female lead detective in Return to Paradise reflects the show’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. As the franchise continues to evolve and explore new narratives, fans can look forward to more thrilling and captivating stories in the future. The success of the spin-offs signals a bright future for the Death In Paradise franchise.
