Why the Biden Administration Believes Israel Has Not Crossed a Red Line in Rafah

The United States has avoided suggesting that Israel has crossed a red line set by President Joe Biden in the ongoing offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. While Israeli strikes have drawn international condemnation, the Biden administration insists that Israel has changed its tactics to reduce civilian casualties. Despite the worsening humanitarian conditions and mass displacement of Palestinians, the US maintains that this is not a major military operation, referring to it as an “uptick” in Israeli military activity.

Critics argue that Biden has refrained from challenging Israel due to domestic political considerations, as support for Israel is strong among Republicans and American voters. The administration has been accused of playing semantics around the definition of the Rafah operation and moving the goalposts when it comes to Israeli actions in the city. Analysts believe that if it were not an election year, Biden would have taken a more forceful stance against Israel’s actions in Rafah.

As the conflict continues, the US is closely monitoring Israel’s tactics and their impact on civilian lives. The administration has emphasized the need for precision and proportionality in Israeli strikes, while also considering the overall impact of the operation on the civilian population. Israel has outlined specific battlefield goals in the Rafah offensive, and the US will assess whether these goals are being pursued in a way that aligns with its conditions and expectations.

The ongoing Israeli offensive in Rafah has been a point of contention between the US and Israel, with Biden warning that the US could cut its supply of offensive weapons if Israel targeted population centers in the city. The suspension of a shipment of heavy bombs to Israel was confirmed as a response to concerns about their use in Rafah. However, the administration’s warnings and threats to Israel have since diminished, with Biden focusing on urging Hamas to accept a proposed cease-fire in a recent address.

Despite the political pressure and criticism surrounding the Rafah campaign, the US has shifted its focus towards encouraging a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The administration’s actions in terms of policy will be key in determining the outcome on the ground in Gaza. As the situation continues to evolve, the US remains committed to supporting humanitarian efforts and facilitating dialogue between the parties involved.
