After three hit series and two beloved Christmas specials, the BBC has quietly axed one of its most popular comedies, Motherland, leaving fans furious and demanding more episodes. Premiering on BBC Two in 2016, the show explored the ups and downs of a group of middle-class mums in suburban London. Despite three series and two Christmas specials over eight years, the BBC has decided to end the series, depriving viewers of further updates on characters like Liz, a single mum played by Diane Morgan. Fans have expressed their disappointment on social media, with one Twitter user lamenting the show’s cancellation and another suggesting a spinoff focusing on one of the characters, Amanda.

Diane Morgan hinted at the possibility of a new show centered around Amanda, giving hope to disappointed fans of Motherland. The BBC has not yet officially commented on the cancellation of the show, but Morgan’s statement suggests that the character of Amanda may live on in a new series. The decision to end Motherland comes after the show’s success and popularity, with viewers praising its humor and relatable depiction of modern parenting. The series featured a talented cast, including Anna Maxwell Martin, Lucy Punch, Paul Ready, Phillipa Dunne, and Tanya Moodie, who portrayed working mother Julia trying to navigate parenting with the help of local mothers.

An American version of Motherland was in the works but was scrapped before production began. The proposed US remake, titled Keeping It Together and led by Ellie Kemper, aimed to adapt the British format for American audiences. Due to undisclosed reasons, ABC decided not to move forward with the project, disappointing fans who were looking forward to seeing how the series would be adapted for American television. The canceled show would have followed a character named Julia, played by Ellie Kemper, as she tried to balance work and parenting with the help of new friends Calvin and Liz.

Fans of Motherland have expressed their sadness and dismay over the show’s cancellation, highlighting its status as one of the best BBC comedies in recent years. The series, known for its humor and realistic portrayal of modern motherhood, resonated with viewers who appreciated its clever writing and talented cast. While the decision to end the show may disappoint many fans, there is a glimmer of hope for a spinoff or new series focusing on one of the characters from Motherland. As viewers wait for updates on the future of the show, they can relive the humor and charm of Motherland through its existing episodes and specials, celebrating the legacy of a beloved comedy that entertained audiences for several years.
