A nonprofit organization in Arizona has found a unique way to support local veterans by donating puppies to former military service members. The doodle-shepherd pups, born on Memorial Day, are being placed with veterans to provide emotional support. The hope is that these puppies will serve their recipients for their entire lives. The puppies and their training are completely free to veterans, thanks to the Arizona chapter of AT&T Veterans in Carefree. One veteran, Air Force veteran Heath Horton, received a pup named Ben Kenobi, who is meant to provide emotional support for Horton’s PTSD. All of the dogs will be trained by Dogs4Vets in Gilbert, Arizona, an organization founded to help veterans find training for their service dogs at no cost. Shaun Claseman of Dogs4Vets explained that service dogs perform tasks directly related to the owner’s disability, which can range from hearing loss to PTSD-related issues like anxiety and night terrors. This initiative has resulted in the donation of 40 puppies in just a year and a half.
