Robert De Niro speaks out on Donald Trump’s guilty verdict: ‘Justice has been served’

Acclaimed actor Robert De Niro expressed his satisfaction with former President Donald Trump being found guilty of all 34 counts in his hush-money case. De Niro shared his thoughts with Page Six during a screening of his movie “Ezra” in New York City, stating that justice had been served. Despite this positive outcome, he remained cautious about getting too excited and still believes that it is not over until it is over, particularly regarding the possibility of Trump winning the 2024 presidential election.

De Niro, a vocal critic of Trump, referred to the intensity of the former president’s supporters as “craziness.” He also hinted at further involvement in campaigning for President Joe Biden, whom he supported outside a Manhattan courthouse earlier that week. Despite being 80 years old, De Niro expressed his intention to continue campaigning, indicating his support for Biden and the cause he believes in.

During a conversation with Variety at the same screening event, De Niro accused Trump of wanting to “destroy” the United States. Trump’s guilty verdict in the unprecedented trial marked a significant milestone, as he became the first former US president to be convicted on criminal charges. The trial concluded with Trump being found guilty on all counts by the jury, setting the stage for his sentencing scheduled for July 11, where he could potentially face up to four years in federal prison.

The dramatic moment in court, where the foreman calmly pronounced Trump guilty on all counts, contrasted with the former president’s subdued reaction as he sat slouched in his seat. Despite his impending sentence, Trump has vowed to appeal the verdict, alleging that the trial was rigged by Biden. He maintained his innocence and declared his ongoing fight for the country and its constitution, asserting that the people’s real verdict would be delivered on November 5.

The charges against Trump stemmed from an attempt to cover up a payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels to conceal a sex scandal during his 2016 campaign. The felony counts related to falsifying invoices, checks, and ledger entries in connection to the payment. Despite the serious nature of the charges, Trump’s adamant denial of any wrongdoing and his intention to challenge the verdict set the stage for a protracted legal battle. The outcome of the trial intensified the political divide in the country, with celebrities and public figures closely following and reacting to the developments.

The screening of “Ezra” provided a backdrop for discussions about the political landscape, with prominent figures such as the movie’s director Tony Goldwyn, Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Bryan Cranston, and Scott Foley in attendance. The event showcased not only the film but also served as a platform for expressing opinions on significant current events, such as the Trump trial and its implications. Through his statements and involvement in campaigning, De Niro exemplified the intersection of art and activism, using his platform to advocate for justice and accountability in the political arena.
