Quebec Liberals conclude party convention, criticize CAQ government as ‘unreliable’

The Quebec Liberal Party recently held a convention where interim leader Marc Tanguay criticized the CAQ government, calling the premier François Legault the worst in modern Quebec history. Tanguay accused the government of losing control of public finances and failing to provide adequate public services to Quebecers. He further emphasized the QLP’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that they will defend all citizens regardless of their origins, culture, or language spoken at home.

The convention, which took place in Bromont and brought together 400 people, focused on the economy and the party’s commitment to financial rigor. QLP president Rafael Primeau-Ferraro emphasized the party’s dedication to the economy and fiscal responsibility, aiming for Quebec to be a leader in the Canadian federation. The convention occurred amidst the party being without an official leader, with a leadership race set to begin in January 2025 and a leader to be selected in June, in preparation for the 2026 elections.

Interim leader Tanguay expressed optimism about the leadership race, believing it will be beneficial for the party to communicate with the public and garner interest from more Quebecers. To engage the public further, the party plans to hold five national debates across the province during the race. Tanguay emphasized the importance of reaching out to Quebecers and highlighting the party’s priorities and values. The convention served as a platform for the QLP to showcase its vision for the future of Quebec.

The QLP’s criticism of the CAQ government reflects growing opposition and discontent with the current leadership in Quebec. By positioning themselves as defenders of all Quebecers and champions of the economy, the party seeks to differentiate itself from the CAQ and gain support from a broader range of citizens. The upcoming leadership race presents an opportunity for the party to solidify its platform and engage with voters in preparation for the next election cycle.

Overall, the Quebec Liberal Party’s recent convention underscored their commitment to inclusivity, financial rigor, and leadership in the province. By criticizing the current government and outlining their vision for the future, the party aims to rally support and present itself as a viable alternative for Quebecers. As the leadership race approaches, the QLP will continue to engage with the public through debates and outreach efforts, with the goal of gaining momentum leading up to the 2026 elections.
