Quietness of Baltimore bridge collapse is port’s equivalent of global pandemic: “It’s unnervingly silent”

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has resulted in the suspension of ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore, affecting businesses and workers in the region. Theresa Abel, operations manager for Davis Ship Service, noted that their business, reliant on port activities, has experienced a significant slowdown with no emails or phone calls. Other businesses like Moss Marine, which performs technical repairs on ships, are also feeling the impact as ships divert to nearby ports and orders are halted.

Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson described the bridge collapse as a major disruption that will severely challenge every business at the port of Baltimore, impacting not only the port workers but also the broader economy of the region. With the port operations supporting 15,000 jobs directly and another 140,000 indirectly, the economic outlook for businesses in the area is grim without significant financial support. Businesses related to the port, such as trucking companies, container repair businesses, and tug boat operators, are all facing challenges as a result of the suspension of ship traffic.

The collapse of the bridge has led to concerns about potential layoffs in the region, with small business owners expecting to have to let go of workers due to the freeze in business. Legislation is being considered to provide support to affected businesses and keep workers employed despite the shutdown of the port. Cruise lines and workers unions have also expressed concerns about potential job losses and financial impacts resulting from the collapse.

Efforts are being made to cushion the blow of the bridge collapse on businesses and workers in the region. Maryland lawmakers are drafting emergency legislation to provide direct support to affected businesses and incentivize port-related employers to maintain a presence in Baltimore. While the impact of the closure of the port is significant for Maryland businesses, experts believe it will not have a major effect on the broader U.S. economy due to the port’s relative size in handling container traffic.

As businesses and workers grapple with the aftermath of the bridge collapse, the importance of the port to the local economy has been highlighted. Baltimore’s port, which remained operational during the pandemic as international commerce continued, is a major economic engine for the region. With businesses facing challenges and potential layoffs, efforts are underway to provide support and keep the economy moving despite the disruption caused by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
