Adrian Gardiner, founder and chairman of the Mantis Collection, started his journey as a conservationist when he purchased a small farm in South Africa in 1989. What was supposed to be a weekend retreat for his family quickly turned into an ambitious rewilding project. Over the years, Gardiner expanded the land to 25,000 hectares and reintroduced various species of wildlife that had been wiped out over the past two centuries. This project, known as the Shamwari Game Reserve, now attracts tourists from around the world and employs over 400 people. In 2000, Gardiner established Mantis Collection, an eco-tourism hospitality business that manages hotels and eco-lodges across Africa. The brand has since expanded into the Middle East and in 2018, Gardiner sold half of Mantis to the hotel group Accor, leading to the creation of the Community Conservation Fund Africa (CCFA).
At 80 years old, Gardiner is now focusing on a new project called Nyosi, located between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in South Africa. He envisions transforming this piece of land into a sanctuary similar to Central Park in New York but much larger, covering 3000 hectares and home to free-roaming wildlife. Gardiner’s goal is to involve the local community, particularly the impoverished residents living nearby. He plans to create job opportunities, education facilities, a museum showcasing the region’s wildlife destruction, and take initiative related to the conservation of rhinos in South Africa. Gardiner believes that his vision for Nyosi could have a significant impact on the community and wildlife in the long run.
