Memorial Day Hours: What’s Open and What’s Closed

Memorial Day, first celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, became a federal holiday in 1971 and is now observed on the last Monday in May. The holiday has evolved over the years, with businesses increasingly choosing to stay open, leading to one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year. This year, government offices, post offices, courts, and schools will be closed, along with U.S. stock markets and banks. Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will also not be available on Memorial Day.

While some businesses, like warehouse membership club Costco, will be closed on Memorial Day, the vast majority of retailers will be open, with many offering big promotional sales to lure customers. Hours may vary by location, so it is recommended to check with individual stores for specific opening and closing times. Memorial Day also marks the unofficial opening of the summer travel season, with auto club AAA projecting that 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the holiday travel period, an increase of 4% from last year.

If AAA’s projections hold true, this year’s Memorial Day weekend could see close to 2005’s record of 44 million travelers. Of the projected travelers, 38.4 million are expected to travel by car, the highest number since AAA began tracking in 2000, and another 3.5 million are expected to travel by air. With such high numbers of travelers, it is important for those planning to hit the road or take to the skies to be prepared for potential delays and to plan accordingly.

Despite the hustle and bustle of Memorial Day weekend, it is important to remember the true meaning of the holiday and take time to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Whether attending a Memorial Day parade, visiting a local memorial or cemetery, or simply taking a moment of silence to reflect, it is a time to pay tribute to those who have served and remember their contributions. As Americans enjoy the long weekend with barbecues, picnics, and time spent with family and friends, it is essential to keep in mind the significance of the holiday and the importance of honoring those who have given their lives in service to their country.

As Memorial Day approaches, it is a time for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude for the sacrifices made by the men and women in uniform. Whether staying close to home or traveling for the holiday weekend, it is essential to take time to honor the fallen and show appreciation for their dedication and service. This Memorial Day, let us all come together to pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country, and to remember the true meaning of the holiday.
