Additional incidents on Thursday and Friday led to authorities picking up 22 individuals from an islet off the southeastern island of Symi, with reports indicating that they had paid smugglers to transport them from Turkey. So far in 2023, nearly 16,000 individuals have reached Greece, primarily by sea, with total arrivals exceeding 48,000. Spain has received the highest number of migrants and refugees in the EU this year, with over 21,000 arrivals according to United Nations data.
