Biden expresses gratitude to Kenya’s Ruto for dispatching police to Haiti and supports decision to not deploy US forces to the mission

President Joe Biden thanked Kenyan President William Ruto for deploying Kenyan police forces to assist in quelling gang violence in Haiti. Biden defended his decision to withhold American forces, citing concerns about potential misrepresentation of American involvement in another conflict. Ruto, facing legal challenges at home, emphasized Kenya’s duty to help maintain peace and security globally. The decision to deploy Kenyan forces has faced criticism in Kenya, with concerns about the lack of legal agreements with Haiti.

The international community’s intervention in Haiti has a complex history, with previous missions marred by scandals and controversial outcomes. Biden and Ruto also called for global action to reduce debt burdens on developing nations, including Kenya, and urged creditor nations to provide better financing terms to support economic growth. The Nairobi-Washington Vision initiative aims to address the challenges faced by developing countries in managing their debts and fostering sustainable development.

Amidst growing debt challenges, Kenya is heavily indebted to China, with estimates indicating that a significant portion of government revenues goes towards debt payments. The Biden administration commended Kenya’s role in the Haiti mission and announced plans to designate Kenya as a major non-NATO ally, highlighting the strengthening security partnership between the two countries. Kenya’s efforts to engage with the U.S. on various fronts, including tech partnerships and investment opportunities, reflect a desire to enhance bilateral relations and attract foreign investment.

Despite a decline in foreign investment since 2017, Kenya remains optimistic about expanding its economic ties with the United States and attracting more investment through initiatives like the CHIPS and Science Act. The visit by President Ruto to Washington signifies Kenya’s desire to strengthen its global partnerships and leverage its growing influence on the international stage. As discussions continue on debt relief and economic cooperation, the relationship between Kenya and the U.S. is poised to deepen, paving the way for increased collaboration in various sectors.
