Key primary win for McDonald’s franchise owner supported by top Democrats may change control of Congress

Oregon State Rep. Janelle Bynum emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, setting up a high-stakes showdown against Republican incumbent Lori Chavez-DeRemer in the fall. Bynum defeated Jamie McLeod-Skinner in the primary, with the general election expected to play a significant role in determining which party controls the House of Representatives. McLeod-Skinner narrowly lost to Chavez-DeRemer in the previous election, after defeating longtime Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader in the primary by running as a progressive candidate.

Some prominent Democrats believe that Bynum, who currently represents Portland’s southeast suburbs in the state House, has a better chance of winning in a general election against Chavez-DeRemer. Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek and three Democratic members of Oregon’s U.S. House delegation have endorsed Bynum, highlighting the party’s support for her candidacy. Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, which includes parts of several counties, is considered one of the swing districts that both parties are closely watching in the upcoming election.

Political analysts point to the importance of electability in the race, as voters will need to consider which candidate has a higher chance of winning. The 5th District is seen as crucial in the national effort by both parties to secure or regain control of the House of Representatives, making the election highly significant. Bynum, originally from Washington, D.C., has been serving in the Oregon House since 2016, representing the suburbs southeast of Portland. She owns four McDonald’s franchises and has focused on issues related to small businesses during her time in office.

Chavez-DeRemer, the Republican incumbent, does not have a primary opponent and is the first female Republican to represent Oregon in the U.S. House. With the stage set for a competitive race between Bynum and Chavez-DeRemer, the dynamics of the election are expected to draw national attention. The outcome of the race in Oregon’s 5th District could have implications for the balance of power in Congress, adding to the significance of the election. As the campaign heats up, voters in the district will be closely watching the candidates’ positions on key issues and their ability to attract support from a diverse electorate.
