Defense attorneys representing Kouri Richins, a Utah mom of three and children’s book author accused of killing her husband in 2022, have filed to withdraw from the case due to an irreconcilable situation. Richins, now 35, is facing attempted murder, aggravated murder, and drug possession charges after allegedly poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with illicit fentanyl to collect life insurance funds. The withdrawal filing by Ray Quinney & Nebeker P.C. stated that the firm had a professional duty to withdraw from representing the defendant due to ethical reasons that emerged during civil cases involving Ms. Richins, requiring the firm to withdraw from her criminal case as well.
The defendant’s lead attorney, Skye Lazaro, requested the court to appoint new counsel to continue defending Richins following the withdrawal of her current legal team. Richins’ defense team also filed a motion to disqualify state prosecutors, alleging that Chief Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth had violated adversarial fairness principles. Lazaro claimed that prosecutors had improperly obtained evidence, including confidential jail calls and letters protected by attorney-client privilege, to build their case against Richins. Both Lazaro and Bloodworth did not respond to inquiries regarding these allegations.

In addition to the murder charge, Kouri was also charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying to poison her husband on Valentine’s Day, although he survived after noticing something was wrong and taking precautions.
