Ed Dwight, America’s first black astronaut candidate, finally got the opportunity to go to space 60 years after being championed by President John F. Kennedy. At the age of 90, Dwight flew with Jeff Bezos’ rocket company, Blue Origin, on a roughly 10-minute flight, experiencing a few minutes of weightlessness and describing the experience as life-changing. The flight from West Texas set a new record for the oldest person in space, surpassing the record previously held by William Shatner.
Blue Origin had been grounded for nearly two years after an accident in 2022, but flights resumed in December with no one aboard. Dwight, a sculptor from Denver, had been recommended to NASA by the Air Force as a potential astronaut in 1963. However, he was not selected for the class that eventually produced famous astronauts such as Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. NASA did not select black astronauts until 1978, with Guion Bluford becoming the first African American in space in 1983. Prior to this, the Soviets had launched the first black astronaut, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, in 1980.
