Dabney Coleman, star of ‘9 to 5’ and ‘Tootsie,’ passes away at age 92

Dabney Coleman, best known for his role in “9 to 5,” passed away at the age of 92 at his home in Santa Monica, California. His daughter Quincy Coleman shared that he passed peacefully and with grace, leaving behind a legacy of humor, passion, and generosity. Known as a teacher, hero, and king, Dabney Coleman’s spirit will continue to shine through his work and loved ones for eternity.

Although the cause of Dabney Coleman’s death is not clear, he had a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. He began working in the ’60s but got his big break in the ’70s when he landed a role on “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.” This role helped establish him as a talented comedic actor and was a turning point in his career. In 1980, Dabney Coleman solidified his status as a world-class jerk with his portrayal of Franklin Hart Jr. in “9 to 5.” He worked alongside Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton, who made him feel equal and supported despite their established statuses in the industry. Coleman’s ability to play negative, caustic, and cynical characters was widely praised, and he continued to showcase his talent in various roles throughout his career.

Aside from his role in “9 to 5,” Dabney Coleman had other notable roles in films and television series like “Tootsie,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Buffalo Bill.” With nearly 180 acting credits to his name, Coleman’s last performance was in 2019 for an episode of “Yellowstone.” He was highly respected for his versatility as an actor and his ability to bring his characters to life on screen.

Over the course of his career, Dabney Coleman received numerous accolades for his performances. He was nominated for six Emmy Awards, winning once in 1987 for “Sworn to Silence.” Coleman also received three Golden Globe nominations, winning in 1988 for his role in “The Slap Maxwell Story.” Despite his success on screen, Coleman valued his family and is survived by his four children and five grandchildren.
