Normal text sizeLarger text sizeVery large text sizeIn a hidden location in Melbourne, behind a nondescript fence and 16 security cameras, exists a secret shelter for women and children at risk of being killed by their partners. This shelter, known as Sanctuary, is run by Safe Steps and provides a safe haven for those fleeing violence, offering them support and tools to start a new, independent life. The facility is flooded with natural light and resembles a homely environment, providing a stark contrast to the high-security measures in place.

Women who seek refuge at Sanctuary are provided with comprehensive support, including medical care, legal assistance, and help in finding suitable accommodation. The staff at Sanctuary work tirelessly to ensure that the women and children residing there are safe and supported during their stay. Many of the clients have experienced severe physical and emotional trauma, and the staff at Sanctuary are dedicated to helping them heal and rebuild their lives.

One of the unique aspects of Sanctuary is the focus on ensuring a safe exit for the women and children who stay there. By providing intensive support and resources, Sanctuary aims to reduce the likelihood of clients returning to dangerous situations. This includes helping children stay connected with education, providing basic training for employment, and assisting in establishing independent profiles with government services.

The work of Sanctuary is crucial in addressing the high rates of family violence in Victoria, where many women and children end up in motels due to a lack of supported accommodation. Sanctuary’s proactive approach to supporting victims of family violence has proven to be effective, with a low rate of unsafe exits compared to motels. The facility accommodates women and children for up to three weeks, during which time they receive intensive support to ensure a safe and successful transition back into the community.

While the clients at Sanctuary remain anonymous for their safety, one former client shared her experience of finding refuge and support at the facility. She emphasized the profound impact that Sanctuary had on her life, from providing a safe place to stay to empowering her to become a survivor. With the help of Sanctuary and other support services, she was able to find transitional housing and build a new future for herself.

The work of Sanctuary and Safe Steps highlights the importance of providing comprehensive support and resources to victims of family violence. By offering a safe and secure environment, along with the tools needed to start anew, these facilities play a crucial role in helping women and children escape abusive situations and build a brighter future for themselves. If you or someone you know needs support, you can contact Safe Steps or other organizations for help and assistance.
