The Milan stock exchange opened nearly unchanged (-0.01%), with limited declines in the rest of Europe: London -0.1%, Frankfurt and Paris -0.2%. ECB board member Isabel Schnabel stated that a rate cut by the ECB in June is appropriate, but based on current data, a cut in July does not seem justified. Milan’s stock market rose by 2.17% this week, while the Eurostoxx 50 index decreased by 0.20%. The banking sector, a significant presence in Milan’s stock market, showed increased activity following French President Macron’s comments on the need for sector consolidation in Europe. Stocks of Mps, Bper, Banco Bpm, and Mediobanca reacted positively to the prospect of mergers and acquisitions.

In the FTSE MIB index, Saipem increased by 2.2%, while Interpump, Amplifon, and Prysmian saw slight declines of about 1%. Wall Street continued its upward trend, with the main indices reaching historic highs recently. The Dow Jones surpassed 40,000 points for the first time, although it closed slightly lower. Asian markets had a mixed day, with Chinese stocks rebounding by 1% in Shanghai and Hong Kong after an initial decline. Retail sales in China in April were lower than expected, while industrial production exceeded expectations, putting pressure on Chinese exports globally. The Nikkei index in Tokyo fell by 0.40%.

In after-hours trading on Wall Street, Reddit’s stock rose by 11% after the social media platform reached an agreement with OpenAI to access Reddit content. Users of Reddit will be able to utilize artificial intelligence tools. The financial markets in Europe and Asia continue to show resilience, with fluctuations in response to economic data and global events. The outlook for the banking sector remains positive in Milan, with potential for further consolidation. Wall Street’s record-breaking performance reflects a buoyant investor sentiment, while Asian markets navigate challenges related to Chinese economic indicators.

As global markets react to shifting economic conditions and geopolitical developments, investors remain cautious but optimistic. The ongoing race of Wall Street exemplifies the strength of the US stock market, while European and Asian markets face varying levels of volatility. The collaboration between Reddit and OpenAI highlights the growing intersection of social media and artificial intelligence. Overall, the financial landscape is dynamic and interconnected, with international markets influencing each other’s performance. Investors are advised to stay informed and exercise prudent decision-making in response to market fluctuations.
