Veteran actress Ayten Gökçer laid to rest in Istanbul

Renowned Turkish actress Ayten Gökçer passed away at the age of 80, drawing many prominent figures from the art world to her funeral at Zincirlikuyu Mosque. Among those in attendance were Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, State Theatres General Director Tamer Karadağlı, actress Zerrin Tekindor, and many of her family and friends.

Minister Ersoy expressed his sadness over the loss of Ayten Gökçer, highlighting her dedication to the art world from a young age. He praised her versatility as an actress and her numerous accomplishments on stage and screen. Ayten Gökçer was recognized for her talent with titles such as State Artist and the Ministry of Culture’s Grand Prize in 1992. The minister extended his condolences to her loved ones.

Ayten Gökçer’s daughter, Aslı Gökçer Oba, shared her mother’s wishes, urging everyone not to grieve but to celebrate her life and achievements. She described her mother as a wonderful person who was loved by many and left a lasting impact on those around her. The outpouring of support and fond memories shared by friends and colleagues reflected the profound impact of Ayten Gökçer’s life and work.

Actress Işıl Yücesoy remembered Ayten Gökçer as not only a talented actress but also a loving mother, friend, and companion. She emphasized the difficulty of describing the extent of Gökçer’s influence and impact on Turkish theater. The news of her passing brought a wave of mourning and reflection on her illustrious career and personal qualities.

Ayten Gökçer was laid to rest next to her husband, actor and former State Theatres General Director Cüneyt Gökçer, at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery following the funeral. Her legacy as a respected and admired figure in the Turkish arts scene lives on through her contributions to theater, film, and television throughout her prolific career.

Born in Ankara in 1940, Ayten Gökçer began her journey in the arts at a young age, pursuing ballet before transitioning to theater. She joined the Ankara State Theatres in 1958 and quickly gained recognition for her performances in various plays and musicals. Over the years, she received numerous awards and accolades for her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft.

Ayten Gökçer’s impact on Turkish theater and cinema is enduring, with her memorable roles and performances resonating with audiences for decades.
