Jim Jordan claims New York hush money prosecutor has an unhealthy fixation on Trump

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is demanding documents from the New York attorney general regarding the hiring of lead prosecutor Matthew Colangelo in Donald Trump’s hush money trial. Jordan accuses Colangelo of being fixated on prosecuting Trump and claims that his involvement in the case demonstrates bias and a potential politicization of the justice system. Colangelo, a former top Justice Department official under President Joe Biden, delivered the opening statement in Trump’s trial last month, leading to accusations from Trump and his allies that federal prosecutors are targeting him to hinder his political prospects.

Trump is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records in relation to the payments made by his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Early in the trial, Trump expressed frustration at the lack of public defense he was receiving from his allies, as he was under a judge’s order to refrain from attacking witnesses and others involved in the case. Trump’s supporters have begun to publicly attack the prosecution on his behalf, as he is unable to do so himself. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has denied Trump’s claims that the indictment is politically motivated.

Jordan’s letter is also seeking communications between Colangelo and various entities, including the New York and Fulton County district attorneys’ offices, the Justice Department, the Democratic National Committee, and the Biden for President campaign. The letter also requests all personnel files related to Colangelo’s tenure at the New York Attorney General’s Office. Trump is facing charges in Fulton County and by special counsel Jack Smith’s office at the Justice Department in cases related to his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump has pleaded not guilty in those cases as well.

The hiring of Colangelo as the lead prosecutor in Trump’s trial has sparked concerns about potential bias and politicization of the justice system. Jordan’s demand for documents and communications related to Colangelo’s involvement seeks to shed light on the motivations behind the prosecution and the individuals involved in the case. Trump’s accusations that the case against him is politically motivated and part of a larger campaign to hinder his political future are being met with denials from prosecutors and legal authorities involved in the case.

Trump’s trial regarding hush money payments made by his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, is ongoing in New York. Trump has criticized the prosecution and expressed frustration at the lack of public defense from his allies. With Colangelo as the lead prosecutor, concerns have been raised about bias and potential political motivations behind the case. Jordan’s request for documents and communications related to Colangelo’s involvement is aimed at uncovering any potential misconduct or bias in the prosecution of Trump. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and continues to fight the legal battles against him in various jurisdictions.
