Utah judge to determine if Kouri Richins, children’s book author on grief, will stand trial for husband’s death

Kouri Richins, a Utah woman, is facing charges for allegedly fatally poisoning her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022. Prosecutors claim she added a deadly amount of the synthetic opioid to a cocktail that her husband drank. Earlier, she allegedly tried to kill him by spiking a sandwich on Valentine’s Day. The mother of three self-published a children’s book called “Are You with Me?” about a father watching over his son after passing away, which could play a key role in the prosecution’s case of framing the crime as a calculated murder with a cover-up attempt.

The upcoming court hearing will determine if there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Witnesses may include family members, a housekeeper who sold Kouri Richins the drugs, and friends of the deceased who had interactions with the accused on the day of the alleged poisoning. The defense lawyer argues that the evidence is circumstantial and may not be solid, questioning the credibility of the witnesses. Allegations have been made by the victim’s sister regarding financial motives behind the murder, including life insurance policies and an estate dispute.

In an unrelated incident, Kouri Richins was found guilty of assault against another sister-in-law shortly after her husband’s death. The victim claimed that the defendant punched her during an argument over access to her brother’s safe. In addition to the drug-related charges, Kouri Richins is also facing charges of mortgage fraud, forgery, and insurance fraud for allegedly manipulating loan applications and insurance benefits after her husband’s death. The defense maintains that the evidence against their client is questionable, pointing to potential ulterior motives from witnesses.

Both the defense and prosecution will present their arguments and evidence during the hearing, and the judge will decide if there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The court proceedings may shed light on the complex web of relationships, financial disputes, and allegations surrounding the case. The outcome of the hearing will determine the next steps in the legal process, which may involve further testimonies from witnesses and additional evidence presented by both sides. Ultimately, the court will have to weigh the evidence and make a decision on whether to move forward with the trial for the alleged murder of Eric Richins.
