Is Artemi Panarin’s lackluster playoff performance raising concerns for the Rangers?

Artemi Panarin is taking some heat for his subpar performance in the Rangers’ last two games, after playing a pivotal role in the team’s early success in the second-round series. Panarin’s impact was noticeably absent in Games 4 and 5, where he only managed two shots and was on the ice for four goals against during five-on-five play. This drop in performance has raised some concerns about the team’s overall ability to secure a series win.

The line of Panarin, Vincent Trocheck, and Alexis Lafreniere struggled to generate scoring opportunities during Games 4 and 5, with only one high-danger chance between them according to Natural Stat Trick. Despite Lafreniere’s strong individual performance in Game 4, the lack of production from Panarin is a cause for concern given his importance to the team. Panarin’s regular season success appeared to be carrying over into the postseason, but his recent struggles have left fans and analysts questioning his impact on the team’s performance.

With the Hurricanes closing the series gap to 3-2 after falling behind 3-0, Game 6 in Raleigh presents an opportunity for Panarin and the Rangers to bounce back. Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour highlighted Panarin’s unique ability to influence games and praised the team’s awareness of his threat on the ice. The Hurricanes have managed to contain Panarin in previous games and will likely focus on tightening their defense to neutralize his impact in Game 6.

Rangers forward Blake Wheeler has returned to full-contact practice after a lengthy absence due to a leg injury, but head coach Peter Laviolette indicated that Wheeler is still working towards full readiness for a return to the lineup. Laviolette stressed the importance of ensuring Wheeler is fully prepared for game action before reintroducing him to game situations. The team will continue to monitor Wheeler’s progress as they navigate the remainder of the series against the Hurricanes.

Defenseman Jacob Trouba was honored with the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award for exemplifying strong leadership qualities on and off the ice throughout the regular season. Trouba and his wife, Kelly, have been actively involved in community initiatives, raising over $160,000 for charitable causes this season. Trouba’s contributions to the team, both in terms of his performance on the ice and his impact within the community, have earned him recognition from his peers and league personnel.

Both the Rangers and Hurricanes opted not to hold practice on Tuesday, likely taking advantage of the break in game action to rest and recuperate before Game 6. The Hurricanes will look to capitalize on their recent momentum and even the series against the Rangers, while New York will aim to bounce back from their lackluster performances in Games 4 and 5. Panarin’s ability to regain his form and lead the team offensively will be a key factor in determining the outcome of the crucial upcoming game.
