Focus on Jan. 6 in tonight’s primaries: Insights from the Politics Desk

The online version of From the Politics Desk is an evening newsletter that provides the latest reporting and analysis from the campaign trail, the White House, and Capitol Hill. In the latest edition, two primaries tonight are previewed, which have a connection to the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol. In Maryland, a former police officer who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6 is running for an open House seat, while in West Virginia, a former state lawmaker who was part of the mob on Jan. 6 is challenging a Republican incumbent. Both races highlight the continued impact of the events of Jan. 6 on American politics.

Maryland’s 3rd District sees Harry Dunn, a 15-year veteran of the Capitol Police force, running for an open House seat against several experienced state legislators. Dunn, who gained national attention following his emotional testimony during congressional hearings investigating the Jan. 6 attack, has been the top fundraiser in the Democratic field. In West Virginia’s 1st District, a former state Del. Derrick Evans, who was convicted for storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, is challenging Republican Rep. Carol Miller in the primary. The outcome of these primaries could have implications for the future makeup of Congress.

Steve Kornacki examines the possibility of a surge in split-ticket voting in the 2024 elections. Recent history shows a decline in ticket-splitting, particularly in the Trump era. However, recent polls in critical states like Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin suggest the potential for voters to support presidential and Senate candidates from opposite parties. This trend could impact the outcome of key races and Senate control in the upcoming election cycle.

Michael Cohen’s testimony in the trial involving hush money payments to Stormy Daniels sheds light on Trump’s role in the cover-up. Cohen admitted to lying about the payment in order to protect Trump and maintain loyalty. Prosecutors allege that Trump falsified business records related to the payments. Cohen’s testimony, along with Trump attorney Todd Blanche’s combative cross-examination, provides insight into the ongoing legal battles involving the former president.

In other news, NBC News provides a reality check on recent polling data regarding the race between Biden and Trump, the battle for Nevada in 2024, Biden’s new tariffs on Chinese exports, and the Supreme Court’s upcoming decisions on closely watched cases. Additionally, potential vice presidential contender Ben Carson’s new book calls for a national abortion ban and an end to no-fault divorce laws. The trial involving Trump’s hush money payments has become a platform for potential running mates to show their support, with some even sporting Trump’s signature red tie.
