Random Inspections of Recycling and Yard-Waste Carts in Penticton

The city of Penticton has announced a program to randomly inspect recycling and yard-waste carts in order to improve the community’s sorting skills. The goal of this program is to educate residents on the proper disposal of specific items and to meet RecycleBC targets to avoid penalty fees in the future. Inspectors will be leaving notices on carts that contain items that are not accepted for recycling, such as hard and soft-cover books, glass, clothing, and soft plastics. It is important to place all recycling loosely into carts and not contained in bags or boxes.

The city’s program aims to lower its recycling contamination rate to 6 per cent from 8 per cent by December in order to avoid increased costs due to fines. If the contamination rate is not reduced, it may result in a less convenient recycling service, such as sorting everything into separate bins or bags. This method has been successful in reducing contamination in other communities in British Columbia. The city hopes that through this inspection program, residents will improve their recycling skills and help achieve the recycling targets set by RecycleBC.
