Organisers are considering a historic gesture that could finally see Robert Lewandowski win the Ballon d’Or

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ballon d’Or ceremony in 2022 was cancelled, and it was believed that Robert Lewandowski would have won the award that year. Lewandowski, who has never won the Ballon d’Or, was considered a strong contender after his impressive performances for Bayern Munich, including finishing the calendar year with 47 goals in 44 appearances, the most in Europe. However, in 2021, Lionel Messi won the award for a seventh time, despite Lewandowski’s remarkable year where he scored a record-breaking 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games. There is speculation that Lewandowski could be given a retrospective win for the 2020 Ballon d’Or during the 2024 ceremony. France Football is reportedly considering awarding him the prize for 2020, as there is an investigation into Messi’s 2021 win due to his recent move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves predicted that Jude Bellingham could win the Ballon d’Or in the future. The rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has seen them give away Ballon d’Or trophies for different reasons. Three years after missing out on the award, Lewandowski could be honored with a retrospective win in 2024. The stakes are high in the boxing world, with Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk set to face each other in May 2022 for the undisputed heavyweight championship, the first since 1999.

In light of Lewandowski’s impressive performances in 2020, where he helped Bayern Munich win the treble, he believes it would be a great honor to win the Ballon d’Or retrospectively for that year. Despite missing out on the award, Lewandowski expressed his gratitude for his achievements in that remarkable season and stated that he wouldn’t be offended if he were to receive the award four years later. Should he win the 2020 Ballon d’Or in 2024, Lewandowski would accept the recognition with humility and appreciation. The article concludes by inviting the readers to share their thoughts on whether Robert Lewandowski should be awarded the Ballon d’Or for 2020 in the comments section.
