Despite Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring in two straight games, including the game-winner in Game 5, and Jordan Staal’s individual brilliance in beating Igor Shesterkin off a breakaway, the Hurricanes ultimately came back for a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Jacob Trouba, who had struggled in the series so far, redeemed himself with a shorthanded goal, the only score for the Rangers in the game. The Rangers had a disappointing plus-minus at five-on-five in the series, showing their struggles in both offensive and defensive play.

The Rangers faced a tough loss in Game 5 against the Hurricanes despite some individual standout performances. Kuznetsov’s recent scoring streak and Staal’s breakaway goal were bright spots for the team, but ultimately, they were unable to secure a win. Trouba’s shorthanded goal was a positive development after his previous struggles in the series, showing his ability to contribute offensively. The Rangers’ overall performance at five-on-five play was a lowlight of the series, indicating the need for improvement in both ends of the ice.

The Rangers have had a challenging series against the Hurricanes, with various ups and downs for the team. Kuznetsov’s resurgence after being a healthy scratch early in the series was a positive sign for the Rangers, providing them with offensive support when needed. Staal’s breakaway goal showcased his skill and ability to create scoring opportunities. Trouba’s shorthanded goal was a much-needed contribution to the team’s offense, reflecting his determination to make an impact in the series.

Despite some standout performances from individual players, the Rangers struggled to secure a win in Game 5 against the Hurricanes. The team’s overall play at five-on-five was a significant issue throughout the series, leading to disappointing results in terms of goals scored and goals against. While Kuznetsov, Staal, and Trouba had their moments in the game, the Rangers were unable to capitalize on these opportunities to secure a victory and extend the series.

Peter Laviolette acknowledged that Game 5 was not the night the Rangers were hoping for, with the team facing challenges beyond just the third period. The Rangers will need to regroup and make adjustments heading into the next game to improve their performance and potentially turn the series around. Despite the tough loss, there are positive takeaways from individual performances that the Rangers can build on as they continue their playoff run against the Hurricanes. With the series hanging in the balance, the Rangers will need to come together as a team and elevate their play to compete effectively against a strong opponent.
