Blinken voices strong US criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza conflict

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has criticized Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza, stating that Israeli tactics have resulted in a significant loss of innocent civilian lives. Blinken emphasized the need for Israeli forces to withdraw from Gaza, while also urging Israel to present credible plans for security and governance in the region after the conflict. He expressed concerns about the resurgence of Hamas in parts of Gaza and warned that heavy military action in certain areas could lead to a lasting insurgency, potentially leaving Israel dealing with chaos and anarchy.

Blinken highlighted the risks associated with Israel’s military operations, particularly in the southern city of Rafah where more than 1 million civilians have gathered. He suggested that while a military operation may initially succeed, it could ultimately cause harm to the civilian population without effectively addressing the root issue of preventing Hamas from governing Gaza. Blinken called for a more strategic approach to achieving enduring security in the region, emphasizing the importance of working with Israel on developing comprehensive plans for security, governance, and rebuilding Gaza.

In a significant move, Blinken referenced a report to Congress that found Israel’s use of U.S.-provided weapons in Gaza likely violated international humanitarian law. He acknowledged concerns about incidents where Israel’s actions were not consistent with humanitarian law and resulted in significant loss of innocent lives. The Biden administration has raised these concerns with Israeli officials and emphasized the need for alternative courses of action that would ensure Hamas is defeated throughout Gaza. The conversation between national security advisers from the U.S. and Israel reflected a discussion on addressing U.S. concerns regarding a potential military ground operation in Rafah.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza has resulted in a high number of casualties, with thousands of Palestinians killed and a full-fledged famine reported in northern Gaza due to Israeli restrictions on food shipments. The situation has led to tensions between the Biden administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with differences in approaches to the war and concerns about domestic protests and Republican support for Israel. The issue has implications for the upcoming presidential election, with Biden stating that his administration will not provide weapons for an all-out assault in Rafah. Blinken’s appearances on news programs like “Face the Nation” and “Meet the Press” further highlighted the administration’s stance on the conflict and the need for a strategic resolution to achieve lasting security in the region.
