Mass exodus as Russia intensifies border attack near Ukraine’s second largest city

Russia’s renewed ground offensive in Ukraine’s northeast has led to intense battles and forced thousands of civilians to flee. The town of Vovchansk has emerged as a focal point in the fighting, with Russian forces approaching from multiple directions and engaging in intense infantry fighting. Evacuation teams have been working non-stop to rescue residents, most of whom are elderly, from the area. At least 4,000 civilians have fled the Kharkiv region since the start of the Russian offensive.

Analysts suggest that the Russian push is aimed at exploiting ammunition shortages before promised Western supplies can reach the front line. Russian forces are using a tactic of launching a disproportionate amount of fire and infantry assaults to exhaust Ukrainian troops and firepower. By intensifying battles in previously static areas of the front line, Russian forces are threatening to pin Ukrainian forces in the northeast while making gains farther south. This offensive follows increased attacks in March that targeted energy infrastructure and settlements, setting the stage for the current ground offensive.

The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed to capture several villages along the border with Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, adding to gains made on Saturday. Ukrainian troops have been engaged in counteroffensive operations in an attempt to disrupt Russian offensive intentions. Russian forces are using tactics similar to those employed in previous battles in other regions, such as heavy aerial attacks followed by infantry assaults. Ukrainian units have reported being forced to retreat in some areas, with Russian forces capturing additional villages.

The Hostri Kartuzy unit of Ukraine’s national guard released a video stating that they were fighting for control of the village of Hlyboke. The Institute for the Study of War has confirmed that Russian forces have captured several villages, describing the gains as “tactically significant.” Despite these claims, Ukraine’s leadership has not confirmed Moscow’s territorial gains. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of halting Russia’s offensive in the northeast, stating that disrupting offensive intentions is the top priority for Ukrainian troops.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen a back and forth between Russian and Ukrainian forces, with Russia making initial attempts to storm Kharkiv but ultimately retreating. In the fall of 2022, Ukraine successfully pushed Russian forces out of Kharkiv, demonstrating to Western countries that Ukraine could stand up to Russia on the battlefield. This bold counterattack played a pivotal role in garnering military support for Ukraine from Western allies. The situation in the northeast remains volatile, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict and efforts ongoing to protect and evacuate those in harm’s way.
