A court in Romania’s capital has extended geographical restrictions against online influencer Andrew Tate, who is facing charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. Tate, a former professional kickboxer with 9.1 million followers on social media, had requested permission to leave Romania as long as he stayed within the Schengen Zone. However, the court extended the restrictions by 60 days, preventing him from leaving the country. Tate and his brother Tristan, along with two Romanian women, were arrested in December 2022 and indicted in June last year. They have all denied the allegations.
The Bucharest Tribunal recently ruled that the prosecutors’ case against Tate met the legal criteria for a trial to begin, although no date has been set yet. Tate’s lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, has appealed the decision, arguing that it lacks legal basis and reasoning. Tate has continuously claimed that there is a political conspiracy against him and that prosecutors have no evidence. He has also been banned from various social media platforms for expressing misogynistic views and hate speech. Despite the legal proceedings, Tate remains defiant, stating that his fame protects him from consequences.
After being held in police detention for three months following their arrest, Tate and his brother were eventually placed under house arrest and then limited to Bucharest Municipality and nearby Ilfov County. They can now travel freely within Romania. In a separate civil lawsuit, four British women have accused Tate of sexually and physically assaulting them. The High Court in London issued the claim, and the case is progressing with the goal of bringing Tate to justice. The women had previously reported him to British authorities, but no prosecution was pursued by the Crown Prosecution Service in 2019.
Additionally, the Tate brothers faced extradition to the U.K. in connection with allegations of sexual aggression dating back to 2012-2015. The Bucharest Court of Appeal granted the British request for extradition, but only after the legal proceedings in Romania have concluded. This adds another layer of legal complexity to Tate’s situation. Despite the mounting legal challenges, Tate remains unapologetic and maintains his innocence. The ongoing legal battles have garnered significant media attention, with Tate continuing to court controversy with his statements and actions.
