New Lows in the Race to Become Trump’s Running Mate: ‘It’s A Cult’

Ambitious Republicans are vying for the chance to become Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, as it could be the fastest path to the Oval Office. Despite the risks of defending Trump’s controversial actions and his loyalty demands, potential candidates like Marco Rubio, J.D. Vance, Tim Scott, Kristi Noem, and Doug Burgum are actively seeking the position. They believe that whoever Trump chooses will be a frontrunner for the next GOP presidential nomination, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming election. The candidates are willing to downplay threats and show unwavering loyalty to Trump to secure their chances.

The loyalty to Trump extends to defending his most shocking actions, including his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, his controversial pardons, felony charges, and personal scandals. Candidates like Rubio and Vance have minimized the risks faced by former Vice President Mike Pence during the Capitol riot and have echoed Trump’s refusal to accept election outcomes. The potential running mates are emphasizing their alignment with Trump’s agenda and principles to appeal to Trump’s base and secure their positions as favorites for the vice presidential spot.

However, there are challenges to becoming Trump’s running mate, such as the Constitutional limitation on electors from the same state voting for both the president and vice president. Rubio faces this obstacle as both he and Trump are residents of Florida, a crucial swing state. Noem, another potential candidate, has faced scrutiny for controversial statements in her book and evasion of questions. Despite these challenges, the candidates continue to seek Trump’s approval by showcasing their loyalty on national platforms.

Democrats have criticized the Republican candidates for their subservience to Trump, labeling it as a cult-like behavior that prioritizes proximity to power over logic and principles. Trump’s focus on glorifying the Jan. 6 attack on Congress and the false claims of election fraud could shape the priorities of his potential running mate. The candidates are expected to align closely with Trump’s messaging on these issues to gain his favor and secure their position as his running mate.

While some warn of the risks associated with aligning themselves with Trump, including potential legal consequences, the candidates are willing to put themselves in the spotlight to advance their political ambitions. Despite the complicated history of those who have associated with Trump, offering both benefits and consequences, the allure of being Trump’s running mate remains strong for ambitious Republicans seeking a path to the presidency. The competition among potential candidates to win Trump’s approval and secure the vice presidential spot reflects the dynamics of power and loyalty within the Republican Party.
