Former roommate exposes last message received by Idaho murder victim Madison Mogen

A former roommate of the four University of Idaho students who were found stabbed to death in their off-campus home in 2022, shared the last text she sent to one of the victims, Madison Mogen. Ashlin Couch, a University of Idaho graduate who moved out of the house in May 2022, remembered getting an alert from the school about a suspected homicide. She texted her friends asking if anyone had heard from Maddie, expressing concern as she felt that something was wrong. Mogen, along with Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, were discovered dead with multiple stab wounds in their Moscow, Idaho home on November 13, 2022. Despite moving out of the home a few months after graduating, Couch stayed in touch with Mogen and Goncalves, and expressed the chilling thought that the tragic event could have happened while she was living there.

Authorities arrested Bryan Kohberger about six weeks after the slayings, after his DNA was linked to a knife sheath found near one of the victims. Kohberger, 29, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. He entered a not guilty plea on his behalf in May 2023. Kohberger’s attorneys submitted an alibi claiming he was out driving alone on the night of the slayings, engaging in activities such as hiking or stargazing. The trial date has not been set yet due to defense motions seeking a change in venue and accusations that prosecutors withheld key evidence, which the prosecution has denied. The three-story house where the victims were found was demolished in December 2023, about a year and a half after the killings occurred.

Couch expressed her persistent thoughts about the tragedy, admitting that the fear of someone watching the house stayed with her. She mentioned feeling unable to walk to her car in the dark for months after the incident. Despite the distance in time and space from the murders, she wished she had the opportunity to say goodbye to her friends. The devastating loss of Mogen, Goncalves, Kernodle, and Chapin left a lasting impact on Couch and their wider circle of friends. The community struggled to come to terms with the senseless violence that occurred within their midst, highlighting the importance of safety and vigilance in similar living situations.

As the legal proceedings continue, with Kohberger facing the serious charges of four counts of murder and burglary, the defense and prosecution are engaged in a tense battle over trial logistics and evidence disclosure. The defense’s claim of an alibi clashes with the evidence linking Kohberger to the crime scene, adding complexity to the case. The demand for justice for the victims remains paramount, as family, friends, and the public await a resolution in the courtroom. The demolition of the crime scene serves as a symbolic act of moving forward and leaving behind the physical reminder of the tragedy, while the memories and impact of the event continue to linger in the minds and hearts of those affected.

The aftermath of the murders has led to a heightened sense of security awareness among the community, as people grapple with the idea of such violence hitting close to home. The shock and grief of losing four young lives in such a brutal manner have reverberated through the University of Idaho and the larger Moscow area. The call for transparency and accountability in the legal process underscores the importance of a thorough investigation and fair trial to honor the memory of the victims. As the case unfolds, the details of the night of the slayings and the subsequent events leading to Kohberger’s arrest shed light on the intricate nature of criminal proceedings and the impact of such tragedies on individuals and society as a whole.

The not guilty plea entered on behalf of Kohberger and the ongoing legal maneuvering present a challenging road ahead in the pursuit of justice for Mogen, Goncalves, Kernodle, and Chapin. The uncertainty of a trial date and the defense’s efforts to change the trial venue add layers of complexity to an already emotionally charged case. The resilience of the community in the face of such a harrowing event is evident in their continued support for the victims’ families and dedication to seeking closure through the legal process. Amidst the devastation and loss, the memory of the four students lives on in the hearts of those who knew them, as they strive to find a sense of peace and understanding in the wake of this tragic incident.
