Debunking the Top Five Myths About Outsourcing Software Development

Damian, the SVP of Professional Services at BairesDev, is responsible for overseeing customer relations and ensuring the company’s operations run smoothly. With the origins of software outsourcing dating back to 1989 when Kodak handed its data processing needs to IBM, the practice has since grown immensely.

Currently, 90% of small businesses in the U.S. plan to outsource some aspect of their operations. Outsourcing not only helps reduce costs but also provides access to a broader pool of software resources. Different organizations have varying software development needs, from small companies needing mobile services to larger corporations requiring additional help for specific projects or deadlines.

Despite the benefits of outsourcing, there are common myths associated with the practice. One such myth is that outsourcing leads to poor quality work. However, by asking the right questions during the recruitment process, companies can ensure that they are selecting developers who align with their values and expectations. Additionally, fostering a sense of belonging among outsourced developers can incentivize them to deliver their best work.

Another myth about outsourcing is that it results in less control over projects. By utilizing effective communication tools and methods, such as team communication platforms and project management tools, companies can maintain transparency and control over outsourced projects. Regular communication and clear expectations are key to project success.

While many believe that outsourcing is primarily for cost-saving purposes, the real value lies in accessing specialized skills, enhancing efficiency, and scaling quickly. Outsourcing can help businesses address skill gaps and meet market demands, especially when facing recruitment challenges or budget constraints.

Cultural and communication barriers are often cited as inevitable challenges of outsourcing, but with nearshoring, companies can find developers who share similar time zones and cultural backgrounds. By treating outsourced developers as integral team members and conducting regular performance reviews, companies can ensure alignment on deliverables and expectations.

Lastly, outsourcing is not just for large corporations but can be customized to address the specific needs of any business, regardless of size. By strategically outsourcing tasks, companies can achieve significant returns on investment and efficiently meet their goals. By conducting due diligence, establishing clear communication channels, and treating outsourced developers as part of the team, companies can maximize the benefits of software outsourcing.
