How to Prevent Meta from Limiting the Political Content You See on Instagram

Meta announced in February that it would no longer proactively recommend political content from accounts that users do not follow. This means that users may see less political content on their feed from accounts they do not follow, such as on the explore page, recommendations, or while swiping through reels. While this limitation may be beneficial for those who do not want to see content that goes against their political leanings, it may also result in users missing out on political content that they agree with but do not follow.

Political content on Instagram is broadly defined as any posts that mention governments, elections, or social topics. Instagram does not provide a detailed explanation of these terms, which means that even posts that are not explicitly political may be filtered out. To remove these limitations on political content, users can adjust their settings by going to their profile page, tapping the three-dash menu, and selecting Content preferences > Political content > Don’t limit. This will allow users to see more political and social topics in their suggested content across Instagram and Threads.

It is important to note that these limitations only apply to political content from accounts that users do not follow. Content from accounts that users follow will not be limited in any way. If users have a Threads account connected to their Instagram, the setting will also affect them there, meaning they will not see political content in their in-feed recommendations, suggested accounts, or notifications. By adjusting their settings, users can choose to either limit or remove these restrictions on political content.

If users find themselves receiving too much political content that they do not wish to see, they can always go back and adjust their settings to limit the amount of political content that appears on their feed. By understanding where these limitations apply and how to adjust the settings accordingly, users can tailor their Instagram experience to best suit their preferences. Overall, the decision to limit political content on Instagram aims to provide users with a more personalized and tailored feed that aligns with their interests and preferences.
