The Voting Results for Speaker Johnson’s Ouster by Members of the US House

The House on Wednesday rejected a motion calling for Republican Speaker Mike Johnson’s ouster, with a 359-43 vote on a motion to table the measure put forward by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. The vote, which required the help of Democrats due to the speaker’s narrow majority, quieted calls for Johnson’s removal among conservative hardliners who were upset about his support for a $95 billion foreign aid package.

Johnson’s divided conference was evident in the vote, as 10 Republicans sided with Greene while 196 opposed her effort. In addition, 163 Democrats voted to table Greene’s motion, effectively protecting the speaker. Twenty-eight members from both parties either didn’t vote or voted present. This shows the challenges Johnson faces in maintaining party unity and addressing dissent within his own ranks.

The vote comes after Johnson’s predecessor, former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California, was ousted in October by eight members of his own caucus. Only two Republicans, Reps. Andy Biggs and Eli Crane of Arizona, voted against both Johnson and McCarthy. This history of factionalism within the Republican Party underscores the ongoing tensions and power struggles within the GOP.

The outcome of the vote suggests that Johnson was able to maintain the support he needed to remain in his position as speaker. Despite facing opposition from within his own party, he was ultimately able to secure enough votes to defeat the motion calling for his ouster. This victory may help to solidify Johnson’s leadership and quell further challenges to his authority within the party.

The vote highlights the importance of party unity and the challenges faced by Republican leadership in managing internal divisions. The result also demonstrates the role that Democrats played in aiding Johnson’s survival as speaker. Moving forward, Johnson will need to navigate these competing interests and work to address the concerns of conservatives while maintaining his position as a leader within the GOP.

Overall, the vote on Wednesday represents a significant moment in the ongoing political dynamics within the Republican Party. It showcases the tensions and power struggles that exist within the GOP, as well as the efforts of party leadership to maintain control and unity. Johnson’s ability to withstand this challenge may shape the future of his leadership and the direction of the party as it moves forward.
