Fani Willis Witnesses Donations Increase Twofold

Donations to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ reelection campaign have doubled this year, with Willis receiving $229,333 in campaign contributions between January and April, more than twice what she raised in the prior six months. Willis, who has seen her national profile rise due to leading a racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and his allies, received more than $176,000 in campaign contributions between January and June of this year. Despite facing efforts to disqualify her from the high-profile case, Willis is set to face Democrat Christian Wise Smith in the primary and Republican Courtney Kramer in the general election.

Earlier this year, one of Trump’s co-defendants sought Willis’ removal from the case based on her relationship with attorney Nathan Wade, whom she had appointed to the prosecution. However, a judge ruled that Willis could remain on the case if Wade resigned, which he did. The Georgia Court of Appeals has agreed to reconsider the disqualification ruling, while Georgia Republicans in the state Senate have launched a probe to determine if Willis and Wade used taxpayer dollars during their relationship. Despite the public backlash and challenges, polling shows Willis leading over Wise Smith in the Democratic primary, with 79 percent of likely Democratic voters supporting her.

While Georgia’s judicial races are nonpartisan, Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one in Fulton County. President Joe Biden won the county in 2020 with over 75 percent of the vote, and Hillary Clinton carried it in 2016 with over 67 percent of the vote. Fulton County, which includes most of Atlanta, has not elected a Republican presidential candidate since 1972. Willis, the first woman to serve as Fulton County’s district attorney since January 2021, has raised more campaign contributions than her Democratic primary opponent Wise Smith and Republican general election opponent Kramer.

As Willis faces reelection amidst the high-profile case against Trump, her campaign donations have increased significantly, indicating support for her continued leadership. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is standing firm in her role despite challenges and efforts to disqualify her from the case. With the primary election approaching, Willis remains a frontrunner, with polling showing strong support among likely Democratic voters. If successful, she will face off against a Republican opponent in the general election, with both candidates having filed their candidacy paperwork. Willis’ fundraising success and polling lead suggest she may be on track to secure another term as Fulton County’s district attorney.
