Israel reopens key Gaza crossing after rocket attack, but UN reports no aid has been delivered.

The recent closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing between Gaza and Israel has caused a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where 2.3 million Palestinians rely on the entry of essential supplies. The closure was prompted by a Hamas rocket attack that killed four Israeli soldiers, and the subsequent Israeli military incursion in the area. The closure has prevented the entry of humanitarian aid, leaving aid workers stranded and fuel rationed. There are concerns that the prolonged closure of the crossing could worsen the already dire situation in Gaza, where a “full-blown famine” is underway in the north.

The United States halted a shipment of bombs to Israel last week amid concerns that Israel was on the brink of launching a full-scale assault on Rafah. The US is worried about the fate of around 1.3 million Palestinians in Rafah, most of whom fled fighting elsewhere. Efforts are being made by the US, Egypt, and Qatar to negotiate a temporary ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The situation in Rafah is linked to these negotiations, with Israel claiming that a wider offensive is necessary to dismantle Hamas’ military and governing capabilities.

Israel now controls all of Gaza’s crossings for the first time since withdrawing troops and settlers from the territory nearly two decades ago. The closure of the Rafah crossing, which is a vital conduit for humanitarian aid, has left many Palestinians in need of assistance. The seizure of crossings and increased military presence have raised concerns about the impact on access to essential supplies and medical treatment. The escalation in violence has led to a significant number of casualties and displacement of the population in Gaza, with large parts of the territory reduced to rubble.

The war between Israel and Hamas has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza. The US has historically provided substantial military aid to Israel, which has only increased during the conflict. The paused shipment of bombs was intended to provide additional military support, but concerns about their use in densely populated areas led to a temporary hold. The situation remains tense, with ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Aid agencies continue to provide assistance, but access to essential supplies remains a critical issue.

Efforts are being made to negotiate a ceasefire and release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The situation in Rafah is a key factor in these negotiations, with concerns about the impact on civilians and the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing has highlighted the challenges facing aid workers and the need for continued support from the international community. The ongoing conflict has had devastating consequences for the population in Gaza, with widespread destruction and displacement. The situation remains fluid, with uncertainty about the future and the potential for further escalation of violence.
