Fox Sports’ Stu Holden believes USWNT falling short of Olympics final would be considered a “failure”

The emphasis in the United States national soccer teams has largely been on the men’s team as they prepare for upcoming competitions like the Copa América and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. However, the women’s team is also gearing up for success in Paris, with expectations running high for a strong performance and a potential gold medal win. Despite this optimism, former USWNT member Carli Lloyd expressed concerns about the team’s current standing in the global competition, stating that the rest of the world has caught up and the USWNT has regressed since the 2020 Olympics.

According to former men’s national team member and current Fox Sports soccer analyst Stu Holden, other countries have invested significantly in their soccer infrastructure and youth development, leading to stronger competition on a global scale. He likened the USWNT to Brazil’s dominance on the men’s side and highlighted the emergence of European powerhouses like Germany, France, and Spain as formidable opponents in women’s soccer. While the USWNT remains among the top three teams worldwide, the pressure is on to secure a gold medal at the upcoming Olympics to restore their reputation as a dominant force in the sport.

Holden stressed the importance of maintaining a winning mentality within the USWNT and not accepting a development tournament narrative for the Paris Olympics. He emphasized the need for the team to reclaim their status as global leaders in women’s soccer and approach competitions with a strong, unapologetic attitude. While the team has faced criticism for off-the-field initiatives led by players like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, Holden recognized the importance of their advocacy work while also acknowledging the team’s need to focus on on-field performance.

With new players like Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, and Alyssa Thompson stepping into leadership roles within the USWNT, there is a shift in focus towards performance on the field and the team’s competitive edge. While the team continues to champion important causes off the field, maintaining a high level of performance on the international stage is crucial to their success and reputation. The upcoming Olympics present an opportunity for the USWNT to demonstrate their strength and skill against tough competition and prove that they are still a force to be reckoned with in women’s soccer.

The USWNT’s recent struggles on the field have led to questions about their ability to maintain dominance against increasingly competitive opponents. However, Holden believes that the team’s dedication to both their off-field advocacy work and on-field performance sets them apart as a unique and important group within the world of women’s soccer. As they prepare for the challenges ahead in Paris and beyond, the USWNT must continue to strive for excellence and uphold the legacy of success that has defined the team for decades.

In conclusion, the USWNT faces high expectations and challenges as they prepare for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. With a tough group stage ahead that includes strong opponents like Australia and Germany, the team must aim for nothing less than a gold medal to restore their reputation as a dominant force in women’s soccer. As new players take on leadership roles and the team navigates both on-field performance and off-field advocacy work, the USWNT must maintain a winning mentality and strive to reclaim their status as a top global team in the sport.
