Two Georgian volunteers, David Gogadze and Beso Lomidze, were killed during hostilities in the Avdiivka sector while fighting for Ukraine. They were part of the Black Eagle unit, which confirmed their deaths on May 7. Georgians rank first among the foreign fighters killed while fighting on Ukraine’s side during the full-scale war with Russia. The Black Eagle unit extended condolences to their families. Pro-Ukrainian Georgian volunteers typically fight in units such as the Georgian Legion, the Caucasian Legion, the Black Eagle, and Tbilisi. The Georgian Legion reported in February that at least 59 Georgian fighters had been killed in battle since the war began, with more casualties reported since then. Estimates suggest that between 50-60 Georgian soldiers have been killed, making it likely the highest death toll of any foreign nationality fighting for Ukraine.

The deaths of David Gogadze and Beso Lomidze highlight the significant contribution of Georgian volunteers to the Ukrainian military efforts. These volunteers have joined various units and have been actively involved in the conflict since the full-scale war with Russia began. Their commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression has been recognized, and their sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. The loss of these two fighters is a reminder of the dangers faced by all those who choose to volunteer and fight on the frontlines in Ukraine.

The Georgian Legion, the Caucasian Legion, the Black Eagle, and Tbilisi are some of the units where Georgian volunteers serve in Ukraine. These units play a crucial role in supporting the Ukrainian forces and have been involved in intense battles in different sectors. The bravery and dedication of these volunteers have earned them respect and admiration from both the Ukrainian military and the local population. Despite the risks involved, Georgian volunteers continue to join the fight alongside Ukrainian forces, demonstrating solidarity and unity in the face of Russian aggression.

The death toll among Georgian soldiers fighting for Ukraine has been steadily increasing since the war began. The exact number of casualties may vary, but it is evident that Georgian fighters have been at the forefront of the conflict, facing the brunt of the fighting in various sectors. The willingness of Georgian volunteers to put their lives on the line for Ukraine reflects a deep sense of solidarity and support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Their sacrifices serve as a testament to the bond between Georgia and Ukraine, forged through shared experiences of conflict and mutual respect for each other’s struggles.

The loss of David Gogadze and Beso Lomidze adds to the growing list of Georgian fighters who have laid down their lives for Ukraine. These individuals have shown exceptional courage and determination in the face of adversity, fighting against a well-equipped and numerically superior adversary. Their sacrifice will be remembered not only by their families and comrades but also by the people of Ukraine who have benefitted from their selfless service. The legacy of these fallen heroes will serve as a source of inspiration for future generations of volunteers who choose to stand up against injustice and oppression, wherever it may be found.

Supporting independent journalism in Ukraine is crucial in highlighting the stories of individuals like David Gogadze and Beso Lomidze, who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and democracy. By joining the fight for independent journalism, individuals can contribute to raising awareness about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and honoring the memory of those who have lost their lives. Through solidarity and support, we can ensure that the stories of all those involved in the fight for Ukraine are told and that their bravery and sacrifice are never forgotten. Joining the fight for independent journalism is a way to stand in solidarity with those who continue to risk their lives on the frontlines, fighting for a better and more just future for Ukraine and its people.
