Two American WNBA players participated in games in Russia following the arrest of Brittney Griner

Two WNBA players, Kayla Thornton and Monique Billings, decided to play in Russia during the offseason, despite concerns raised following the incarceration of Brittney Griner in 2022. Thornton mentioned that she and her family prayed about the decision and felt it was the right choice for her. Other Americans, including corporate security executive Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, are being held in Russian jails. The U.S. government is working to negotiate for their release.

An American soldier was recently arrested in Russia on charges of criminal misconduct. WNBA players often play in international leagues during the offseason, with Russia being a popular destination due to its high-paying league. However, the country has lost its favored status following Griner’s arrest and imprisonment as well as the ongoing war with Ukraine. Despite the risks, Thornton and Billings played for Dynamo Kursk, alongside other former WNBA players like Megan Walker and Bria Holmes.

Griner, who also played in Russia, expressed concern for the safety of American players in the country. She emphasized the importance of being cautious and letting others know their whereabouts at all times. Thornton shared that she mainly stayed between the gym and her house while in Russia, interacting mainly with her team and feeling safe with the support of Dynamo Kursk officials. She had a positive experience overall, despite being aware of the political tensions in the country.

Despite taking a trip to the ballet and visiting the Kremlin while in Moscow, Thornton maintained a low-key approach to her time in Russia. She mentioned that she was not near the city during a terrorist attack that occurred in late March, which served as a reminder to be aware of her surroundings. Thornton, who has played in various other countries, described Russia as a regular country despite its political situation. She remains undecided on whether she’ll return to Russia for the next offseason, focusing on her current team, the New York Liberty.

Overall, the decision of WNBA players to play in Russia has raised concerns due to the country’s political tensions and the risks involved. Despite the positive experiences shared by players like Thornton, the safety and well-being of Americans in Russia remain a priority. The cases of wrongfully detained individuals, including the soldier and the journalists, highlight the challenges faced by those in the country. The decisions made by players like Thornton and Billings reflect their personal choices, guided by prayer and careful consideration amidst an uncertain geopolitical landscape.
