Michelin has recently introduced a new “key” system for hotels in Italy, similar to its star system for restaurants. Out of the 526 hotels listed in the Italy guide, 146 were awarded different key ratings. Eight hotels received the highest rating of three keys, followed by 31 with two keys, and 107 with one key. These properties varied in style, from boutique hotels in former palaces to cozy farmhouses in Tuscany, which received the most awards with 32 properties, including one three-key, seven two-key, and 24 one-key establishments.
Among the top-rated hotels were JK Place Capri, a boutique hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples, and Il San Pietro in Positano, offering stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. Corte Della Maestà in Civita di Bagnoregio is a four-room boutique hotel housed in a former bishop’s residence, adorned with art and antiques. Reschio Castle, located between Umbria and Tuscany, features suites in a church sacristy and an ancient tower, with a swimming pool set amidst lush lawns. Casa Maria Luigia is a country house with a Michelin-starred restaurant, while Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco in Montalcino boasts a winery, cooking school, and organic vegetable garden on a vast estate.
The classification of luxury hotels by Michelin’s new key system is aimed at providing clarity for customers seeking exceptional accommodations. Portrait Milano, a newly opened hotel, received a two-key rating and was praised by Valeriano Antonioli, CEO of Lungarno Collection, for distinguishing itself in the competitive market. Antonioli noted that the guide could help international travelers discover the best hotels in countries they plan to visit, particularly smaller independent brands. The criteria for evaluating hotels includes their restaurants, design, and service, emphasizing how well a property serves its guests and reflects the local culture.
Michelin plans to expand its key ratings to include hotels in Japan and Korea, following the positive reception of the system in Italy. The goal is to establish a comprehensive guide for luxury hotels globally, highlighting the unique offerings and experiences provided by each property.
