Mets’ Pete Alonso Benched in Game Against Cardinals

Pete Alonso, the slumping first baseman for the Mets, received a partial day off from the starting lineup for the first time this season. Alonso had been struggling at the plate, entering the day in a 1-for-28 tailspin that had lowered his season numbers to .206/.295/.420. Despite not starting, Alonso entered the game as a defensive replacement in the Mets’ victory over the Cardinals and went 0-for-1 at the plate. Manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged that it was difficult to inform Alonso that he would be on the bench, but felt it was important to give him a day off to work through his struggles.

A decision is pending on pitcher Kodai Senga’s rehab progression, with a possible third live batting-practice session or beginning of a minor league assignment on the horizon. Senga is not eligible to return from the injured list until May 27. Tylor Megill, another injured pitcher, is scheduled to pitch four innings and 60-65 pitches in his next rehab start. The Mets will then decide if Megill is ready to be removed from the injured list and potentially return to the rotation or be sent to Triple-A Syracuse.

Binghamton right-hander Joander Suarez earned recognition as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week after throwing 6 1/3 hitless innings with seven strikeouts in a game against Hartford. Suarez has pitched to a 2.60 ERA with 24 strikeouts and eight walks in five appearances this season. In a roster move, Yohan Ramirez was claimed off waivers by the Mets, while left-handed pitcher Max Kranick was designated for assignment to create space on the 40-man roster. Ramirez had started the season with the Mets before being DFA’d.

Overall, the Mets are dealing with injuries and roster decisions as they navigate through the early stages of the season. Pete Alonso’s struggles at the plate prompted a rare day off, with hopes that it will help him work through his slump and return to form. Pitchers like Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill are progressing in their rehab assignments, with decisions to be made about their potential return to the rotation or assignment to the minor leagues. Despite challenges, players like Joander Suarez have been able to make an impact and earn recognition for their performances on the field. Roster moves like claiming Yohan Ramirez off waivers demonstrate the Mets’ efforts to improve and adjust the team as needed. Despite the ups and downs, the Mets continue to work towards success as the season progresses.
