Opening Weekend Box Office of ‘The Fall Guy’ Fails to Impress

The Fall Guy, the big-budget action comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, failed to meet expectations in its opening weekend as it only brought in a domestic total of $28.5 million, falling short of the projected $30 million to $40 million. Despite this disappointing start, the film’s international box office earnings of $36.9 million helped boost its overall worldwide total to $65.4 million. With a production budget estimated to be between $125 million and $140 million, The Fall Guy will need a strong international performance to make up for its underwhelming domestic debut.

In comparison to last year’s summer movie season opener, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, which earned $118.4 million domestically in its opening weekend, The Fall Guy’s performance is lacking. With upcoming competition including the Planet of the Apes sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and other highly anticipated releases like IF and Back to Black, The Fall Guy faces a challenging path ahead to attract audiences and make a significant impact at the box office.

Despite its opening weekend struggles, industry experts believe that The Fall Guy has the potential to perform well internationally, especially in the action comedy genre. However, the film will likely need to have a long theatrical run to recoup its production and marketing costs, which can significantly add to the overall budget. With a star-studded cast and the appeal of an action-packed comedy, The Fall Guy may have a chance to thrive in the global market and turn its box office fortunes around in the weeks to come.

In addition to The Fall Guy, the horror thriller Tarot made its box office debut over the weekend, surpassing expectations with an opening weekend total of $6.5 million in the domestic market and $3.7 million overseas. With a lower production budget of $8 million, Tarot is on track to become profitable sooner than The Fall Guy. The top five films at the box office also included box office holdovers like Challengers, which added $8.7 million to its domestic total, and a re-release of Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace, marking its 20th anniversary with $7.2 million in domestic ticket sales.

As the summer movie season kicks off, moviegoers can look forward to upcoming releases like the Mad Max Fury Road prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and other highly anticipated films that will compete for audience attention and box office success. With a diverse range of genres and star-studded casts, the box office landscape is set to be competitive and unpredictable in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned for more updates on the latest box office performances and the impact of international sales on the overall success of Hollywood blockbusters.
