Euronews poll shows far-right taking the lead in Italy before European elections

The upcoming European elections in Italy are showing a rise in support for various political parties, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party projected to win the most votes. A poll by Euronews from April indicates that support for the party remains stable at 28%, while the centre-left Democratic Party and the populist Five Star Movement are also gaining momentum. However, right-wing rivals Lega and Forza Italia are predicted to have a tough time, as they are projected to receive just under 8% of the vote. Meloni has been personally leading her party’s election campaign, with a focus on increasing voter turnout to secure more seats in the EU Parliament and potentially influence future coalitions.

Meloni’s goal is to position her party to play a key role in forming a grand centre-right coalition with the European People’s Party, a desired outcome for outgoing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. However, Meloni faces challenges within her own country, particularly from competitor Matteo Salvini, a key partner of French far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the European Parliament. Additionally, the left in Italy, particularly the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement led by former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, is gaining strength. If these forces can find common ground, they could create a formidable structure in Italy’s politically fragmented landscape.

The Euronews poll also showed rising support for the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, indicating that these parties are gaining traction with Italian voters. While the Brothers of Italy party remains stable in the lead, the potential for a stronger left and centre-left alliance poses a challenge for Meloni and other right-wing parties. The growing influence of the left in Italy could shift the political dynamics in the country and impact the formation of coalitions in the future. Meloni’s strategy to increase voter turnout and secure more seats in the EU Parliament reflects her ambition to play a significant role in shaping Europe’s political landscape.

The European elections in Italy are crucial for the country’s political future, as they will determine the composition of the EU Parliament and the potential for future coalitions at the European level. With various parties vying for support and seeking to position themselves strategically, the election results will have far-reaching implications for Italy and its role within the European Union. The rise in support for the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, along with the stable position of the Brothers of Italy party, indicates a changing political landscape in Italy, with potential implications for the balance of power in the European Parliament and beyond. Meloni’s efforts to build a strong centre-right coalition reflect the broader trends shaping European politics and the competition for influence within the EU.
