On May 1st, 65 suspects who were detained for attacking police officers at Saraçhane Square on Labor and Solidarity Day had their legal proceedings completed at the prosecutor’s office. Out of the suspects, 52 face arrest on charges of “opposing the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations”, “making terrorist propaganda”, and “resisting a public official”, while 13 suspects were referred to the duty magistrate court for the application of judicial control measures.
The incident took place during Labor and Solidarity Day demonstrations in Istanbul, where 217 suspects were detained for attempting to advance towards Taksim Square and attacking the police. Out of those, 182 were released. Subsequently, Security Directorate Security Branch teams identified 30 more suspects involved in the attack through camera recordings and facial recognition system, who were also taken into custody.
Following a health check, the 65 suspects were escorted by the police to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan. Among them, 52 suspects were presented with a request for arrest while 13 were recommended for judicial control measures. The suspects were accused of violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations, spreading terrorist propaganda, and resisting a public official.
