The first American Indian Olympic gold medalist, Jim Thorpe, and the late Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey received posthumous awards.
The only Republican lawmaker among the recipients was former Sen. Elizabeth Dole, who served in the cabinets of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, replacing the Medal of Freedom established by President Harry S. Truman in 1945. It honors individuals who have made a notable contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or cultural and public endeavors. Biden himself had received the award from President Barack Obama while serving as vice president on Jan. 12, 2017.
