From Liver to Insects: 8 ‘Unusual’ Foods Recommended by Nutritionists

Many people are hesitant to try certain foods that are perceived as offputting, but these foods can actually have numerous health benefits, according to experts. Natalie Gillett, a registered dietitian, emphasized that cultural and psychological factors often shape our perceptions of food, and it’s important to challenge these stigmas. Paulina Lee, a gut health functional dietitian, also encouraged trying foods that may elicit a “yuck” reaction because they can be rich in nutrients like B vitamins and protein.

Some foods that may initially seem unappealing can be surprisingly beneficial for your health. Tremella mushrooms, for example, are packed with nutrients such as fiber, vitamin D, and antioxidants. Natto, a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans, contains beneficial enzymes, probiotics, and vitamin K2. Cottage cheese is a lean protein that is rich in calcium, despite its chunky consistency that some may find offputting. Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi can promote a healthy gut microbiome and aid digestion.

Sardines and tuna fish, despite their fishy smell and slimy texture, are nutritious sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Sardines, in particular, are low in mercury and provide anti-inflammatory properties, supporting bone health and metabolism. Organ meats such as liver, kidneys, and heart are revered in various culinary traditions worldwide for their nutritional value. Insects are a sustainable and protein-rich food source that can offer essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.

Despite their initial offputting characteristics, these foods can be incorporated into your diet in creative ways to reap their health benefits. Tremella mushrooms can be added to stir-fries or dessert soups, while natto can be enjoyed with soy sauce or incorporated into rice dishes. Cottage cheese can be served sweet or savory, and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi can be used in dressings and sauces. Sardines and tuna fish can be added to salads or sandwiches, and organ meats can be grilled or minced and added to dishes like meatballs or sausages. Insects can be included in baked goods or enjoyed as crunchy snacks.
